A paper I wrote on the benefits of honey in the 10th grade (at the behest of my wonderful mother) inspired me to further research the topic. But before writing either paper, nearly everything I researched for this project was new to me. It was a wonderful learning experience. More than learning about bees' jobs and about what they produce, I learned to appreciate them. Bees deserve our appreciation, our protection. They benefit us in innumerable ways - that is the least we can give in return.
Of course, the Qur'an & Hadith tell us of honey's curative nature, but researching it added to the "Subhanallah" factor of the topic as a whole. It awed me to read about the colors of honey that the Qur'an mentions, about its benefits to mankind. To be honest, finding some reputable sources of research was a bit difficult, as was filtering unnecessary information. My paper suffered from messy organization, and I suffered from crippling laziness until deadlines (and afterward). As always, I have Sr. Naseera & Ms. Ayesha Mall to thank for their patience and guidance.
Researching this topic changed my fear of bees into a newfound appreciation and love for them. Well, I still avoid them at all costs, but I truly appreciate them and am always in awe of what they can do. These tiny bees have the power to provide us with at least one-third of our food supply. And how does the world respond to this? It treats plants with pesticides and kills off colony upon colony. I wasn't aware of how dire the effects of pesticides were until I looked more into this topic. Alhamdulillah, the end result of this project was a heightened appreciation for bees, and my replacing of sugar with honey. My tea and love for my religion is a lot sweeter.
